Samvid

Giving the annual research journal from SPJIMR a new spin and designing it for a stronger impact and encourage reading.

SPJIMR curates and publishes Ph.D. research papers on management in an annual magazine, SAMVID. These are solutions to issues observed by experienced people. Well-researched and documented, they identify issues and offer solutions that could benefit further research and industry. The magazine pages were almost mechanical and a mass of grey. It looked very boring and was extremely demanding on the reader. It seemed to have been designed to appeal only to academicians and no one else.

Our contention was that these research papers can have an impact not just on academics but also on industry. We wanted to move the journal away from being relegated to library shelves and make it a talking point.

We started by creating a magazine with two different sections. The first part includes essays and opinions from leading professionals specific to the case studies as a starting point. This would offer an objective and relevant starting point and also set up a reference point for even the casual, indifferent browser. We illustrated these articles with stock images because of financial limitations and to make the journal more vibrant visually. We named this section “Think” because they were thought-provoking articles by eminent thought leaders in their chosen areas.

The second section of the magazine had the research papers. We played around with the typography and also introduced colour in the case studies to break the earlier monotony of continuous text. The text was laid out to change the pace of reading. We wanted to make the papers easier to read and encourage even a casual browser to snack on and consume the content. This section was named “Act”.

A cover that captured the essence and purpose of the articles and essays rounded off the journal and encouraged a pick-me-up.
