Autocar India

Magazine redesign and new workflow

Autocar India, India’s largest automobile monthly magazine, used the 96-page UK weekly edition templates for the 300+ pages of the Indian monthly. Like clothes, magazine design is not one-size-fits-all. Every periodical needs its own reading pace. We retained the directions established in the UK template but changed elements to make the magazine a more leisurely read. While there were quite a few analytical pieces and long features in the Indian edition, the pages looked very similar because of the approach.

This was a design thinking exercise where we studied the workflow and the way various departments worked, both in isolation and when collaborating with other departments. We tweaked the workflow to make it more inclusive and also proposed two new departments to improve quality, reduce pressure during production, and initiate a library for easier access and retrieval of information.

The existing photography, art, and edit teams started working with the new imaging and library teams, which led to better-planned stories, improved the quality of the images, and allowed them to access archives quickly. We monetized the archive of images and content through the library.

We then redesigned AutoCar to be a visually driven and, therefore, slower-paced feature-led monthly that retained the familiarity of the UK template but changed the pace of reading according to the sections. There was a clear distinction between features, opinions, and analyses across the magazine. New sections and story formats built around reader utility and benefit found their way into the magazine.

A new team for custom publishing and native advertising was also created. Workflows were tweaked for these sections to be integrated into the production cycle. The result is a modern classic.
